Qualifications for Geography Teachers

Led by the Royal Geographical Society (with IGB), Chartered Geographer (Teacher) is the only ongoing professional accreditation linked to CPD in Geography and is relevant to the TDA framework of professional and occupational standards for teachers. CGeog (Teacher) can support your application for a leadership or Advanced Teacher role and enhances your career portfolio and employability.

If you have a geography degree or equivalent, have been teaching geography for at least six years, have an ongoing commitment to CPD and embed your professional development in your teaching, you are an ideal candidate for Chartered Geographer (Teacher). MA in Geography Education

Run by the Institute of Education, University of London, this is the only dedicated Masters degree for geography educators. It is available to anyone with an interest in geography education and many students are practicing teachers or involved in geography education. The course can be taken entirely online, or in combination with face-to-face sessions, and takes one year full-time or two years part-time.

Master of Arts in Applied Professional Studies in Education (MA APSE)

The Sheffield University MA in Applied Professional Studies in Education is an exciting new programme which is run in partnership with nine subject associations (including the GA) and local authorities. It is supported by the Training and Development Agency for Schools as part of its Postgraduate Professional Development (PPD) programme.

Masters in Teaching and Learning

The Masters in Teaching and Learning (MTL) is a Government-funded, classroom-based qualification developed to help teachers extend their teaching skills and abilities. This will benefit the children and young people they teach.

The qualification is being introduced in recognition of the high quality of education currently offered to children and young people in England, and the fact that the demands on teachers' knowledge and skills are increasing as the learning needs of pupils become more challenging, complex and diverse.

By developing an ethos of shared learning, the impact of the MTL will be felt beyond the classroom and should benefit the school community as a whole.

Initially, the Masters in Teaching and Learning (MTL) is being offered to eligible newly qualified teachers. In time, ministers expect all teachers will have an opportunity to take the MTL. The MTL will be available to the first cohort of eligible NQTs in the 2009/10 academic year.

The MTL is expected to take approximately three years to complete.
